September in the Library

AUTHOR TALKS As September arrives the library is abuzz with new events. Firstly, we are looking forward to our upcoming programme of talks for the autumn/winter season. Tickets are on sale for our talk by Alex Anglesey, the 8th Marquess of Anglesey, on September 20th. Alex will be telling us all about his recent biography of Lord Willian Paget; of whom he is a direct descendent. His book, entitled, The Great Survivor of the Tudor Age, chronicles the life and times of one of the most prominent English statesmen of the Tudor age. Lord William Paget served Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I – and is often referred to as the power behind the throne. One of the most fascinating figures of the Tudor court, this really will be a night not to miss for History lovers but especially those who are interested in the Tudor period. Tickets are now on sale so pop into the library so you don’t miss out.

October brings the FOWL AGM, which this year will be held on Thursday October 10th at 8pm in the library. All are warmly invited to attend. Watch out for the launch of our 2025 calendar in late October too; as I write judging is ongoing from the over 160 images entered and I am certain a wonderful calendar will emerge. Looking further ahead, save the date of November 15th, when Imogen Matthews will be talking about her latest publication in the Dutch Girl series.

ONLINE RESOURCES EVENT Have you ever wondered just what are all the online resources on offer at the library? Can your reserve and renew online? Just what newspapers, encyclopaedias, music libraries, audio books and other facilities are available and how do you access them? We are very pleased to announce a free one-off special event for all our library users on October 3rd at 2.30pm. This will include a 20minute presentation showcasing all the library resources online followed by the opportunity to ask questions. Please register your interest in attending this free event at the library.

FOWL FA It is the last few days of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge; which runs until September 7th.  This year’s theme – Marvellous Makers – is all about creativity; from dance to drawing, junk modelling to music; there’s something for everyone! All children who finish the Challenge will get a medal and a certificate; and Under 4s can take part in a mini challenge with their own special card and stickers. Pop into the library to get all the details. You can also find out more at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/summer-reading-challenge  or go to summerreadingchallenge.org.uk for more fun! Thank you so much to Jen Skene for her marvellous window that has allowed us to celebrate all those readers who have completed this year’s challenge.

We were delighted to have a summer Storytime/Rhymetime session in the paddock in August; what a lovely way to spend a summer morning! This month Storytime will be back in the library on September 7th and 21st, Rhymetime on the 3rd and 17th and Lego Club on the 28th.

ART IN THE LIBRARY Our latest exhibition: ‘The Art of Words’ by Josephine Bradley, Aggie Tait and Al Tait is truly wonderful. There is so much to look at and admire; please don’t miss it as you will regret it! Later in the month there will be a new, exciting exhibition by Jen Skene. We are so fortunate to have such a wealth of amazing artists in our community; the library is delighted to be able to offer our exhibition space to these talented individuals and showcase their work for us all to admire and enjoy,

KEYBOARD IN THE LIBRARY! Did you know we have a keyboard visiting our library! Come in and have a go; music and headphones supplied…
