August in the library

AUTHOR TALKS

Looking ahead to September we are really excited to be welcoming Alex Anglesy, the 8th Marquess of Anglesey, on September 20th who will be telling us all about his recent biography of Lord Willian Paget; of whom he is a direct descendent. His book, entitled, The Great Survivor of the Tudor Age, chronicles the life and times of one of the most prominent English statesmen of the Tudor age. Lord William Paget served Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I – and is often referred to as the power behind the throne. One of the most fascinating figures of the Tudor court, this really will be a night not to miss for History lovers but especially those who are interested in the Tudor period. Save the date now.

FOWL FA

On June 27th, it was a great pleasure to host children’s author Jackie Holderness in the library to talk about her book ‘The Princess who hid in a Tree’; a story based on the Anglo-Saxon princess Frideswide. We invited two classes from Watlington Primary to come to hear two consecutive talks from Jackie over the course of the morning. It was a great success with very positive feedback from the school and we do hope that we will be able to facilitate other such events in the future.

The Summer Reading Challenge is up and running and will contine until September 7th.  This year’s theme – Marvellous Makers – is all about creativity; from dance to drawing, junk modelling to music; there’s something for everyone! All children who finish the Challenge will get a medal and a certificate; and Under 4s can take part in a mini challenge with their own special card and stickers. Pop into the library to get all the details. You can also find out more at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/summer-reading-challenge  or go to summerreadingchallenge.org.uk for more fun!

Storytime, Rhymetime and Lego Club will be taking a summer break this month.

ART IN THE LIBRARY

There is much to see in the library this month. Neil Foreman’s wonderful exhibition of two parts continues for the first week of August; so please do come in and admire it before it is too late. This will be followed by an exhibition by Aggie and Al Tait and of course we have our current painting from James Kelso to enjoy. Don’t miss all these wonderful offerings from our very talented local artists that the library is proud to champion.

Have you entered our photography competition?  The theme for next year’s calendar is: Watlington Landmarks. All the details of how to enter are in the library OR simply email fowlphotocompetition@gmail.com The deadline is officially August 1st but if you are very quick you might still make it!
