Happy 2024 to all from FOWL

Happy New Year everyone; hope you had a very happy and restful Christmas season and are looking forward to 2024. FOWL have a number of exciting events planned this year; first up we are very much looking forward to later this month, January 19th, whenwe have a major talk planned in St Leonard’s Church.  Lord Jay of Ewelme, former British Ambassador to France and Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, will be telling us all about his fascinating diplomatic career with his talk Travels of an Ambassador.  Tickets are available NOW from the library so don’t miss out!

FOWL FA The library was the place to be on Christmas Fair day; it was heaving! Special Christmas Activities were running all morning; thank you so much to our fabulous FOWL FA team. What a great community event. I hope you had a chance to enjoy Jen Skene’s magical Christmas window too. We are so lucky that she shares her enormous talent with us! Storytime this month is on January 6th and 20th and Rhymetime continues on January 9th and 23rd. Looking ahead, we are excited about the visit next month of children’s author Jackie Holderness. Jackie will be with us on February 10th so watch out for further details on our Facebook page nearer the time.

HAVE YOU ANY PRELOVED LEGO? DONATE IT TO THE LIBRARY! We are thrilled to announce an exciting new venture for 2024 in the library; a Lego Club. We hope to have this project up and running by the Spring on the last Saturday of every month. But first, we need to call on YOU, our wonderfully generous community, to take time to look in your cupboards and lofts for preloved Lego bricks that you would be happy to donate to the Library. If you have some, please please bring them along to the library or call Karen on 07376 976604 if you have something big and bulky. Keep an eye on the Friends of Watlington Library Facebook page and the Library window for updates and we’ll see you at Lego Club soon!

FOWL CALENDAR 2025: WATLINGTON LANDMARKS Did you manage to buy a calendar? Our Watlington Seasons calendar for this year proved very popular; as did the selection of notecards generated from some of the winning images. Thank you to everyone who supported us by buying our calendars and notecards. They are an important fundraising tool for FOWL and help us ensure that we can continue to support our community library. The notecards are available in the library all year round and are very useful so do pop in and ask to see the selection.

We have already been asked about the theme for next year’s calendar and this will be: Watlington Landmarks. You can interpret this in any way you choose; you may decide that a particular landscape, building or even local event is a Watlington landmark. It is entirely up to you. The competition will not open until later in the year as usual – but knowing the theme as early as possible gives you the chance to get your thinking caps on…the very best of luck!
