FOWL hosts Philip Pullman for 21st Anniversary

“Read like a butterfly; Write like a bee”

The Friends of Watlington Library were delighted to host the eminent author Sir Philip Pullman CBE FRSL, on Friday 26 April at St Leonards’ Church, Watlington.

Sir Philip marked the 21st anniversary of FOWL’s formation in style, delivering an eloquent and deeply personal account about his love for books and libraries and their subsequently pivotal roles throughout this life. As one of the world’s most prominent authors and one of our country’s most tireless advocates for the importance of libraries, who better to celebrate our wonderful community library here in Watlington.

The evening was a great success, and included a surprise reading from Sir Philip’s upcoming book to be published this autumn. What a treat! Sir Philip’s ardent support for and defence of our libraries was clearly evident. In addition, the breadth of questions from those looking for advice and inspiration were met with easy humour and geniality. We all felt very privileged to witness what felt like a very special and intimate occasion, where those present gained a real insight into the loves, values and writing styles of Sir Philip.

FOWL are indebted to the Mid-Counties Co-operative Society for their sponsorship of this event, which allowed us to provide refreshments for donations. As a major fundraising event for the FOWL charity, we are delighted to report that we made over £2,700 towards our support and promotion of Watlington Community Library. We are also deeply grateful to the Reverend Daniel Thompson, for his warm welcome and able assistance throughout the organisation of this event. Thank you also to the Book House in Thame for providing books on the evening. Most of all, we are extremely thankful to Sir Philip for a rather wonderful and memorable birthday.
